The town’s name is derived from the Aboriginal word “Kour-an-bong”, meaning “rocky bottom creek” or “water over rocks”

Lieutenant Percy Simpson was the first modern settler in region. In 1861 Robertson Land Act allowed the town to grow thus leading to construction of Catholic church, school and a police station. In 1873 a courthouse was built and in 1881 a post office was established. The establishment of railway line in the 1880s led to the decline in population this is because of the depression of the economy.
The region has schools for example Cooranbong Public School and Avondale school.
The strange name of this subrub comes from the Aboriginal word meaning either “rocky bottom creek” or “water over rocks”. Nowadays, the area is home to some unique attractions, such as The South Seas Islands Museum which features a collection of artefacts collected by Seventh Day Adventist missionaries. The huge war canoe needs to be seen to be believed.
