Henry F Halloran in 1920 named this suburb Buttaba Hills due to influence of English Garden City Movement. Several streets in the suburb were named for localities in UK. Buttaba Hills Estate has a jetty located on the western side of the Secret Bat, off Wrexham Circlet.
On 31st May 1991 the status of suburb was assigned and boundaries were defined by the Geographical Names Board.
This sleepy suburb lies just south of Balmoral alongside Lake Macquarie. Its name derives from an Awabakal word meaning “the name of a hill on the margin of the lake”. Despite this local flavour, many of the suburban streets fefature the names of UK localities.
