Awaba nsw is a town and locality in the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, inland from Toronto. The name Awaba is of Aboriginal origins, and means “flat or plain surface”, referring to Lake Macquarie.

Mr. W.A.Kingscote was the earliest land grand and held a 1100acre property,Parish of Awaba.
Crown subdivision was the earliest subdivision in which it was approved in 20/8/1891. Their were no street names in the first subdivision,in 1892 street plans consisted of Barton St,Melbourne St,Brisbane St and others,nellinda St,Heaton St, and Adelaide.
The timber workers were the area’s pioneers and they included Field,Wellard,Puddy and Murell families.
In 1885 a timber depot was established and in the same year the area was selected as a site for railway construction depot.in 1948 Awaba state coal was established.
In 1889 the first post office was opened,in 1891 the first public school was opened

Awaba is slightly inland from Lake Macquarie, although it does owe its name to the body of water. The word ‘awaba’ means ‘flat surface’ in the Aboriginal dialect, and refers to the calm surface of the lake.
The town has a long history, and was originally settled by timber workers. It then developed due to the needs of railway contractors in the area.
