The population of the area is approximated to be 1,474 people in 2011. This area is the first place of Reservation to preserve fossil forests in Australia.
In 1882 the area was subdivided and later in 1959 the first school was opened which up to date it has maintained an Aboriginal interpretative and cultural centre. This region was named after Richard Fennel who took residence in 1847. The first post office was opened in 1947. In 1901 the first bridge was built up and the second bridge was built in 1967.
Fennell Bay is the site of the discovery of a fossil forest, otherwise known as a petrified forest, in 1834. This forest played an important part in the lives of both the European settlers and Aboringal traditions. The town was named after Richard Fennell, who bought the lease to the bay.
